After being
up half the night we ended up sleeping in pretty late so we didn’t manage to
get up to anything before I had to go to my Photo Tour of Jaffa and Heidi to
the conference. I would like to point out again that it’s stupid hot. Fortunately,
everything is very close by. My photo tour was in Jaffa which according to
google maps was a ½ hour walk away. It turned out to be 15 maybe 20. Which meant
I was there early so I found a coffee shop and some shade.
A bit of
history first. Jaffa is the southern and oldest part of Tel Aviv. It’s known as
the world’s oldest ports and is thought to have been the port from which Jonah
left in the story of Jonah and the Whale. They also claim the rocks just beyond
the pier is the place where Andromeda was rescued by Perseus.

I lucked
out again and had a private tour. The guide was wonderful. By the end of the
day I could sense the photo he saw just by his body language. Jaffa is an
incredibly photogenic area. There was just so much to see. It has different
styles of architecture, lots of graffiti, interesting stores, the restaurants
all seem to have an eclectic mix of tables and chairs, workshops, artists, the
flee market, the harbour… The tour even included stops to taste local foods.
Don’t ask me what we ate, I haven’t a clue. I just know that it was very yummy.
Being alone on the tour meant that we covered more ground than he usually does
so we also managed to cover some of the areas in the other tours that he offers
and I got to see parts of the Florentin quarter and Neve Tzedek. I have to
admit that I was pretty tired by the end of the day. I met up with Heidi at the
conference hotel and we went out for dinner with one of the students.
